Cook Memorial Public Library District (CMPLD) is looking for an innovative, collaborative, customer service-oriented person to be part of our Youth Services team. The ideal candidate values working with a diverse population, is committed to providing engaging programming for children in grades K-5 and is energized by being part of a team that celebrates the skills of each person.  

 

Many families in our community speak a second language, predominantly Spanish, Russian, and various East Indian languages. Proficiency in any of these languages is desirable.

 

HOURS:  

Part-time, averaging 25 hours a week. Includes one full weekend per month, one evening per week, and daytime hours. Opportunities for substitution hours. 

 

 

DUTIES:

Develops and presents varied programming for students in grades K-5, including book discussion groups.
Maintains knowledge of all genres of children’s literature.
Provides reference and readers’ advisory services at both library locations.
Handles collection development responsibilities by selecting and weeding materials in assigned areas.
Guides patrons in the use of electronic products, including the website, online catalog systems, downloadable materials, electronic databases, and handheld devices.
Assists with administrative tasks such as creating inventories and lists of materials, preparing materials for programs, entering data, compiling statistics, etc.
Stays abreast of current trends, issues and topics by reviewing relevant professional literature and attending conferences and workshops.    

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree 
Two or more years’ experience working with children, preferably in a library setting
A demonstrated understanding of programming for children in kindergarten through grade 5.
Enthusiasm for providing excellent customer service.
Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
Fluency in the use of Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Ability to use other electronic resources and assist patrons in using these resources.
Reliable and willing to fill in extra hours, when necessary.
Reliable transportation to/from library Cook Park Library in Libertyville and Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills, as well as off-site venues for programs, training, and other meetings.
Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods and guide patrons through the library and in library programs.

 

SALARY & BENEFITS: 


Starting at $22.00- $26.00 an hour, DOQ. Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. Paid sick, vacation, holiday, and parental leave. Cost of living and merit increases. Optional vision, dental, life insurance, and 457(b) deferred compensation plan.
