Our Technical Services Department is seeking a responsible, team-minded individual to fill the Head of Cataloging position. Our ideal candidate has significant cataloging experience and has worked in a supervisory capacity. We’re interested in an individual who is detail oriented but also considers the big picture.  

HOURS: 

• Exempt, full-time position: 37.5 hours per week.  
  Weekday hours.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervise, train, and evaluate three cataloging staff.  
• Perform cataloging and classification duties.
• Prepare original cataloging records using OCLC and review preliminary original records prepared by the cataloging assistant.
• Check MARC records imported into the Sierra ILS and make necessary corrections.
• Oversee BackStage Library Works authority control services. Send records regularly and ensure reports are reviewed and issues resolved.
• Provide reference services to patrons during regularly scheduled shifts, twice a month.
• Assist with maintenance of name and subject authority files.
• Perform retrospective cataloging and/or classification projects as assigned.
• Maintain knowledge of current news and changes about cataloging and the tools we use, and share information with cataloging staff.

REQUIREMENTS:

• MLIS degree.
• Strong cataloging experience in all formats.
• Knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, RDA, MARC records, LC subject headings, Dewey Decimal System, and library systems.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Awareness of new developments in cataloging and classification, and participation in appropriate professional organization.
• Must be able to attend training sessions and meetings outside the library.
• Must be able to move library materials or operate automated equipment in the workplace.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 

Anticipated salary range $62,000-$65,000 DOQ. Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) and optional 457(b) savings plan. Health, dental, vision, and life insurance. Paid vacation, sick, parental leave and scheduled holidays. Cost of living increases and merit bonuses.
