The person in this role will thrive as part of a collaborative team that designs and delivers programs and services that are developmentally appropriate for children throughout their first five years of life. This role requires excellent organizational and time management skills. As part of a dynamic team, this opportunity is ideal for someone who is creative and proactive.
As part of the Youth Services staff, a key element of your work will be to serve Library patrons at our reference desks. In this role, you will respond to information in person and on the phone, including homework assistance; reading recommendations for children birth -grade 8; and guide patrons in using Library resources. You will be serving a diverse patron base from our large library district.
Hours: 20 hours per week, with 1 evening per week and 1 weekend per month, with opportunities for additional hours.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Early Learning Duties
- Collaboratively plans, prepares and presents story times for children aged 0-5 years and their caregivers
- Assists in planning and presentation of early learning programs and services, including preschool outreach.
Public Services Duties
- Provides reference and readers’ advisory services at both library locations.
- Maintains knowledge of all genres of children’s literature.
- Guides patrons in the use of electronic products, including the website, online catalog systems, downloadable materials, electronic databases, and handheld devices
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with children aged 0-5 years in a library, early childhood center, school or similar setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively with adults and children.
- Fluency in use of Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
SALARY & BENEFITS:
$22.00/hour. Participation in Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF); 457 savings plan; paid sick, vacation, and scheduled holidays; COLA and merit increases; time-and-a-half pay on Sunday.
